Tips for Interviewing a Relative
1. Schedule a 1-2 hour block of time because it can become overwhelming to talk for a long time on any subject.
2. Ask your relative to prepare a box of old photo to use as props for conversation.
3. Try to direct the conversation, but sit back and mostly listen.
4. Bring a tape recorder to record your conversations while taking brief notes.
5. Ask them to follow up the interview with additional questions through letters or email if you cannot sit down again.
6. Use this time to verify information you have already uncovered, but mostly collect information you can only find by talking to people, like family stories and feelings.
7. Always send a thank you note to show your appreciation for their time.
