Nicki Minaj was born with the name Onika Tanya Maraj on December 8, 1984 in Saint James, Trinidad. Until the age of five, Nicki Minaj lived with her grandmother. While she was still a toddler, her parents started a life in Queens New York and sent for their children.
Unfortunately coming to America was not the American dream Nicki Minaj's family hoped to live. It was the crack years, so her father fell into a devastating drug habit and failed to hold down a job to support his family. Adding the unstable family environment, her father become violent and even went to the extreme of trying to kill her mother by setting fire to the family home. Escaping from the family drama, Nicki stuck to her education and graduated from LaGuardia High School while studying singing and acting.
Young Money CEO Fendi discovered Nicki Minaj through her Myspace Artist page and included her in The Carter Edition of Young Money's The Coming Up DVD series. Popular hip hop artists and rappers like Lil Wayne, Ludicris, Usher, and Mariah Carey tagged Nicki Minaj as a collaborative artist on their albums.
