Nicolas Sarkozy Biography
Nicolas Paul Stephane Sarkozy de Nagy-Bosca (born. June 17, 1943)
Born : January 28, 1955 in 17th arrondissement of Paris, France
Parents : Paul Sarkozy de Nagy-Bosca (a Hungarian Immigrant) and Andree Mallah (French-Catholic woman of Greek-Jewish descent)

His father :
Nicolas’s father Paul was a descendant of a family belonging to the lower nobility ranks of Hungary. Paul’s family possessed land and a small castle in the town of Alattyan, less than 100 miles from Budapest. They were eventually forced to flee to Germany when the Red Army entered Hungary, and when they returned their possessions had been seized by the government. Paul fled once again when the military wanted to send him to Siberia for service and he lived in Austria and Germany before settling in Marseilles in 1948. It was in France that Paul Sarkozy met Nicolas’s mother, Andree Mallah, in 1949.

The couple wed and had three sons: Guillaume in 1951, Nicolas in 1955 and Francois in 1957. Later in 1959, Paul Sarkozy left his wife Andree, and the two divorced in 1960. He subsequently remarried two more times and fathered two more children. Paul did not concern himself with Guillaume, Nicolas, or Francois after leaving them, nor did he offer financial support. In turn, Nicolas resented Paul for abandoning his family for many years to come.

His Mother :
Nicholas’s mother, Andree, was daughter to Benedict “Benico” Mallah, the son of a jeweler, and Adele Bouvier, a war widow. Andree’s father Benico was a very successful urologist and STD specialist from Salonica, Greece. In earlier times, Benico’s family resided in an affluent area of Paris, where he attended school after the age of fourteen. He became a French citizen after completing his baccalaureate in medicine, and became a doctor in the French Army During World War I. It was during this time that he met his wife-to-be Adele Bouvier, who he wed in 1917. Together they had two daughters, Susanne and Andree, Nicolas’s mother. The family hastily left Paris and hid in Correze, a small town in western France, during World War II to escape Nazi capture and extradition to concentration camps. It was imperative for the family to escape, as fifty-seven family members of the Mallah family died at the hands of the Nazis during the Holocaust. If they didn’t conceal their whereabouts, their fates may have been the same.

When it was safe, the family returned to Paris. Their daughter, Andree met her husband-to-be Paul Sarkozy in Paris in 1949, while she was a law student. The marriage eventually ended. His mother Andree moved to be close to her family in a very affluent area near Paris, where and Benico, Nicholas’s grandfather, became a father figure, and a tremendous positive influence for Nicolas. It is at this time that President Sarkozy believes that he developed his initial interest in politics. Without the guidance of his beloved grandfather, he may not be the powerful leader that we know today.

His Career in Politics :
Sarkozy obtained his Masters Degree at The University of Paris: Nanterre, where he studied private law, and later obtained a DEA degree in business law. After passing his bar exam he chose to specialize in business and family law. His political career started when he was only twenty-two years old, as a city counselor of Neuilly-sur-Seine, continuing on to be the mayor of the same city, and the youngest in the history of France. He has also acted in the positions of Minister of the Interior, Minister of Finance, and leader of the UMP, a French conservative party, before his campaign for President. Sarkozy, running unopposed, was the victor in the 2007 election with 98% of votes. As President of France, Sarkozy has made a point to fight intolerance, racism being considered one of his most intolerable offenses. His long family history of persecution has undoubtedly influenced the strong beliefs that he has today, regarding tolerance towards all people. He is a strong advocate of affirmative action for minorities, and civil unions for same-sex couples, although he is opposed to same-sex marriage. He is a progressive and forward-thinking leader, making a pledge to cut down in CO2 emissions in France, in an effort to slow global warming. He has also passed laws in France to limit the presidency to a two- term limit, giving parliament veto power over the president, and put an end to the presidential right of pardon, and many other important issues that have attracted global attention.
